“Held on the first Saturday of every June, Hats Off Day is when Heights merchants ‘take their hats off’ to their community and their customers, and the entire Heights community celebrates together. It’s a huge, one-day extravaganza featuring a colourful main-street style parade with real local flavour, followed by a big street party.”                                                                                     – Hats Off Day website

On Saturday, June 7th, 2014, I had the opportunity to volunteer at Hats Off Day, the “Best Festival in Burnaby” (for the last 10 years), located on the portion of Hastings Street in between Gamma Avenue and Boundary Road in Burnaby BC.

This year was Hats Off Day’s 30th anniversary, with an ‘80s theme. Parades, live music, kids activities, delicious treats, and performances filled the street with tingling energy. I was beyond excited to join the fun with the rest of my community!

With a couple of other volunteers, we were given the job of blowing up and handing out balloons to all the children roaming about the street. During lunchtime, I was also able to perform with my dance team, the Burnaby North Hip Hop Crew, at one of the busy intersections on Hastings St.
