There are 195 countries in the world, and I am so privileged to be able to say that I live in one of the best countries in the world. Yes, that amazing country is CANADA!! I have lived in Canada all my life and my parents immigrated here in hopes of a better and more successful life. I will be forever grateful for this as I have been able to participate in many activities and be a part of amazing communities that I may not have been able to if I lived in another country. Although many of us take for granted all the opportunities that are present, I want to talk about them in this blog post and perhaps open up our minds to how fortunate we are here in Canada.
As many of you know, Canada just recently turned 148 on July 1, 2015! Canada is in fact a very young country compared to others. Yet, our economy is strong, and there are many job opportunities that are created for our citizens. I have a strong belief that Canadian citizens are extremely resourceful and strong in any situation, and are able to overcome obstacles to create a more prosperous life. We have free health care and are able to express our opinions freely without fear of being prosecuted. This is something extremely incredible that we are able to say what we want and share our opinions.
We are extremely accepting of other nations and immigrants. Especially in British Columbia, there is a great diversity of races, cultures and languages. Multiculturalism is something that I am an advocate for. It is important for all races and cultures to be accepted and I feel as if Canada has come a long way with this goal. Something else that is amazing is that same-sex marriage has been legalized in Canada since 2005, and this is something to be extremely proud of. Many other countries are following this great example which is very heartening.
Finally, Canada is absolutely BEAUTIFUL!! Although I have only had the chance to visit two Canadian provinces (BC and Quebec), I am certain that the rest of Canada also embodies the pristine landscapes and natural scenery. So much of our land is covered in forests, mountains, lakes and other elements of nature. It is actually proven that being close to nature can help us recover from illnesses faster and view life in a more positive way. As a result of this, Canada has some of the most polite and courteous people on earth! If you see anyone who says “sorry” many times in a day, they just might be Canadian ;).
As with every country in the world, Canada is not perfect, but it is as close as it gets! However, with all the privileges that we have in Canada, it is important to cultivate a sense of selflessness and try to help other countries who are not as wealthy, have a poor health care system and are governed by corrupt governments. We have the responsibility to use all the opportunities that we receive to help others have a better life. And many Canadians already have this mindset of helping others. While Canada is a great country, the people living in it are what makes it so amazing. I am proud to say that I am Canadian and I always will be.
